Instead, there are 4 combat abilities for each character, and 4 shared gadgets. Peter got jealous of Miles’ venom powers – sharing the name of the villain despite having no connection and never being mentioned – so he stole Doc Ock’s arms and made them his own. Even though the four metal arms are usually reserved for the Iron Spider suit.

 

Before she dies, May reveals that she knows he is Spider-Man and is proud of him. Following the capture of Wilson Fisk by Spider-Man, a masked gang known as the Inner Demons begins seizing Fisk’s illicit assets. Queens is also home to Midtown High where Peter went to high school. Manhattan is the central stage for the events of the first two Spider-Man games. This borough remains a fully explorable area and will still hold vital plot points in its districts. Rumors recently began circulating that Insomniac could be in the early development stages for Marvel’s Spider-Man 3. A new job listing indicated that the studio is in the early stages of developing a new AAA title, and given past leaks, it’s not hard to work out that this could be for a new Marvel’s Spider-Man ​​​​​​game. The studio has been hard at work on a new Wolverine game for the past few years, while a planned DLC for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was also canceled.

 

However, the plot is structured in a way that gives focus to other villains and storylines at the same time. Like Batman having to save Mr. Freeze from The Penguin so he can make a cure for Joker. There’s a way to balance your stories, and Insomniac has yet to do it. MJ looks like she aged 20 years and had botched buccal fat removal surgery.

 

Upon seeing Peter wearing the exosuit, Connors reveals that it is actually an alien lifeform called a symbiote, which Oscorp obtained years prior from a meteorite, and warns Peter to destroy it. Under the symbiote’s corrupting influence, Peter refuses and keeps it for himself despite learning that Harry’s illness has returned, straining their friendship. As Peter goes on a symbiote-induced rampage against the Hunters (even nearly killing Mary Jane at one point), Kraven captures Miles and forces him to fight Li.

 

I won’t even hint at any of these except to say that Spider-Man 2 opens with a bang, offering up a sense of scale not previously seen in the series. It’s an adrenaline-fuelled reintroduction to the series that tests how well you remember the combat, as well as providing a few new tricks. It’s also the start of one of the new side-story villain threads that are optional, and while those don’t offer anything overly new in terms of gameplay, they do add valuable extra scraps of story. They flesh out these villains, allowing fully formed characters to emerge where once they were merely one-and-done boss battle appearances. Much like Marvel’s Spider-Man, the sequel also has a slow, but steady build-up, as the game begins with an action segment where players have to save Manhattan from the Sandman.

These characters do add a bit more flavour to the world and its largely homogenous population of NPCs you’re clearly not intended to look at too closely. Speaking of boss battles, that’s one area that takes a noticeable step up from our initial tangos with Kingpin, Vulture, and the rest. One of my criticisms of the first in Insomniac’s series was how uninspired many of the showdowns felt, with their quicktime-heavy fights making a light impact. Improvements were made in Miles Morales, but here in the full-fledged sequel, boss battles really come to life. You’re made to wait a little too long for them sometimes, but when they do arrive they never fail to excite.

 

It soundtracks a world that looks stunning, even when played in performance mode at a stable 60fps as I did for most of my playthrough. Miles fights for his life in Kraven’s arena against his worst enemy, as Peter works to track down and free Miles himself. MJ, Harry, and Peter have a heated exchange as Peter fails to recollect the events of the previous evening, and Harry begins to spiral. On a dark rainy night, Kraven’s hunters trigger a brutal rampage from Peter and the Symbiote, so MJ and Miles must do everything they can to wake him up to his actions. Peter tracks the Lizard through the sewers of New York, fights the monstrous beast, and learns of the true nature of his new Black Suit.

 

After exiting the wind tunnel you will arrive at your destination and the trophy pops in midair while you still fly. At Harry’s insistence, Peter destroys the symbiote and frees Harry from its control, but renders Harry comatose. Peter, Harry and MJ go to the fair and share memories of their past while going on many theme park rides. As the three of them sit on the Ferris Wheel, Hunters attack the park, as they are trying to capture the reformed villain, Tombstone. At this point, Harry reveals that he has merged with the Symbiote, which has given him powers that help Peter save the day.
